Intro

Shaxi is one of the most perfectly preserved ancient market towns in Yunnan — a Bai minority village that served as a key staging post on the Ancient Tea Horse Road (the trade route between Yunnan and Tibet) for over a thousand years. The Friday market, held continuously since the Tang Dynasty, still draws Bai, Yi, and Tibetan traders from surrounding villages. The central square, Sideng Square, with its Ouyang Stage (a 400-year-old opera stage), Jizupeng Temple, and traditional inns, has been carefully restored and is one of the most atmospheric historical spaces in southwest China.
