Intro

Harbin Ice and Snow World is the world's largest ice festival and one of the most extraordinary spectacles on earth. Each winter, thousands of workers cut enormous blocks of ice from the frozen Songhua River and construct an entire city of palaces, towers, and sculptures — some reaching 30 metres high — which are then lit from within by coloured LED lights. The result, visible only after dark, is an otherworldly landscape of glowing ice that has no parallel anywhere in the world.

Best Time to Visit

January for peak festival. Mid-January when all structures are complete. Evening visits only for the full experience.

Highlights

  • The centrepiece is always a monumental ice palace — different each year — that can be explored on multiple levels. The ice slides descending from the major structures are thrilling. The entire site covers over 100,000 square metres. The light show begins at sunset and continues until midnight.

Getting There

Sun Island, northwest of Harbin city centre. Taxi from central Harbin (¥30-40, 20 minutes) or festival shuttle buses from Zhongyang Dajie.

Tickets & Entry

¥330 adult (peak season). Children under 1.2m free.

Practical Tips

Dress extremely warmly — temperatures regularly reach -25°C. Hand warmers are essential. Visit after dark (from 5:30pm) for the full illuminated effect — daytime visits are much less impressive. The festival runs approximately January 5 to late February. Book hotels months in advance.
