Highlights — Why we like Sera Monastery

AA

Intro

Sera Monastery is one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Tibet (with Drepung and Ganden) and the most accessible from central Lhasa. Founded in 1419, it once housed over 5,000 monks. Today around 500 monks remain, and the monastery is famous for its daily debate sessions (2:30-5pm except Sundays) in which monks in vivid maroon robes engage in animated, physically expressive philosophical debate — clapping hands sharply to make points and circling their debate partners in an extraordinary spectacle.

Best Time to Visit
