OCT Loft (华侨城创意文化园) is Shenzhen's most important creative district, occupying a cluster of 1970s factory buildings in the Overseas Chinese Town area. The conversion began in 2004 and the district now houses over 50 galleries, design studios, architecture firms, advertising agencies, and some of Shenzhen's best independent restaurants and cafes. The architecture — red brick, exposed steel, industrial skylights — contrasts sharply with Shenzhen's glass towers elsewhere. Regular art events, design fairs, and market days animate the space.
