Highlights — Why we like The Bund

AAA

Intro

The Bund is the defining image of Shanghai. A 1.5-kilometre waterfront promenade on the western bank of the Huangpu River, it is lined with 52 grand buildings in European architectural styles — Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, Gothic, Baroque — constructed between the 1860s and 1930s when Shanghai was one of the great international trading cities of the world. Facing them across the river, the glass towers of Pudong create one of the most dramatic urban panoramas on earth.

Best Time to Visit

October-November for clear autumn skies. Visit at both day and night for the full experience.

Getting There

Metro Line 2 or 10 to East Nanjing Road station, then a 10-minute walk east to the waterfront. The Bund runs between Suzhou Creek in the north and Xin Kai He in the south.

Local Tips

The Bund promenade is free and open 24 hours. Visit during the day for architecture and the afternoon light on the buildings, then return after 8pm for the Pudong light show. The river tourist boats are overpriced — the free promenade walk provides better views. The underground pedestrian tunnel to Pudong is a quirky light-show experience worth the ¥55 fare.
