Intro

Tianzifang is a warren of narrow shikumen (stone gate) laneways in the French Concession, transformed from a residential neighbourhood into Shanghai's most charming artisan quarter. Independent boutiques, ceramic studios, photography galleries, and hole-in-the-wall cafes occupy the ground floors of restored lane houses. Washing still hangs from upper floor windows. Cats sleep in doorways. It feels authentically old Shanghai — particularly in the early morning before the tourist crowds arrive. Best visited on a weekday morning with no agenda.
