Highlights — Why we like The Great Wall at Mutianyu

AAA

Intro

Mutianyu is the best Great Wall section for most first-time visitors. Fully restored, 90km northeast of Beijing, it offers spectacular mountain scenery without Badaling's overwhelming crowds. The Wall here dates from the Ming Dynasty and stretches across steep ridges with watchtowers at regular intervals. A gondola cable car ascends from the valley; a toboggan slide descends — fast and genuinely fun. The walkable section covers 3.5km between the easternmost and westernmost points, taking 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace. Spectacular in autumn when forested hillsides turn red and gold.

Best Time to Visit

April–May and September–November. October for autumn foliage. Avoid summer weekends.

Getting There

Taxi or Didi from Beijing approximately ¥200–250 each way (90 min). Public: Bus 916 from Dongzhimen to Huairou, then Shuttle H23 to Mutianyu (2–2.5 hours total).
