Li River Cruise
A four-hour river journey through the world's most celebrated karst landscape
Intro
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the great scenic journeys in Asia. Over four to five hours, a boat drifts 83 kilometres through a landscape that appears painted rather than real — a continuous panorama of karst peaks rising sharply from flat plains, rice paddies, bamboo groves, and water buffalo beside the river banks. The journey ends at Yangshuo, a small town that has evolved into one of China's most popular independent travel destinations.
Best Time to Visit
April-October for best water levels. April-May for mist and atmospheric morning light. The cruise runs daily weather permitting.
Highlights
- Nine Horses Fresco Hill — a cliff face where natural markings resemble nine horses in different poses — is the most famous landmark along the route. Yellow Cloth Shoal offers the most photographed reflection of karst peaks in still water. The final approach to Yangshuo, with the peaks clustering more dramatically, is the most spectacular section.
Getting There
Cruise boats depart from Zhujiang Wharf, approximately 30 minutes south of Guilin city by bus or taxi. Return from Yangshuo to Guilin by bus (¥25, 90 minutes) or taxi (¥200).
Tickets & Entry
¥210-310 depending on cabin class. Book in advance during peak season (April-October).
Practical Tips
Book tickets through your hotel or a reputable agency in Guilin — ¥210 for a standard cabin, ¥310 for upper deck. The cruise runs year-round but low water levels in November-March may affect certain sections. Upper deck seats offer better views and fresh air. Bring sun protection and a light jacket regardless of season.
