Intro

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is the southernmost glacier in the northern hemisphere and the most visually spectacular feature of the Lijiang landscape. The mountain rises to 5,596 metres and is permanently snow-capped, its glacier visible from central Lijiang on clear days. A cable car system provides access to three different altitude levels, the highest reaching 4,506 metres on the glacier itself.

Best Time to Visit

October-May for clearest skies. Summer brings afternoon cloud that can obscure the glacier.

Highlights

  • The Glacier Park cable car (the highest, reaching 4,506m) offers the most dramatic glacier scenery and is the primary reason to visit. The Spruce Meadow mid-altitude area (3,240m) has beautiful alpine meadows and is accessible by a separate cable car. The mountain is the sacred home of the Naxi people's god Sanduo and features prominently in Naxi mythology.

Getting There

From Lijiang Old Town: taxi (¥100) or tour bus. The mountain is about 25 kilometres north of Lijiang. Combined scenic area tickets and cable car tickets can be purchased at the entrance or in advance.

Tickets & Entry

Scenic area ¥230 (includes one cable car). Glacier Park cable car ¥130 additional. Total approximately ¥360 for the full experience.

Practical Tips

Altitude sickness is a serious risk on the glacier. Ascend slowly, avoid running, and rent supplemental oxygen at the cable car base (¥50 per canister) if you feel lightheaded. Bring warm clothing even in summer — temperatures at 4,506m are near freezing year-round. Book the glacier cable car ticket separately — it frequently sells out.
