Tiger Leaping Gorge
One of Asia's finest hikes — a two-day trail through one of the world's deepest gorges
Intro
Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the most spectacular hiking routes in Asia. The gorge, cut by the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, is approximately 3,900 metres deep — one of the deepest gorges in the world. The high trail, running 22 kilometres from Qiaotou to Walnut Grove, traverses the upper rim of the gorge with vertiginous views downward to the churning river and upward to snow-capped peaks.
Best Time to Visit
April-June and September-November. Avoid July-August (monsoon rains can make trail slippery) and January-February (snow and ice at altitude).
Highlights
- The 28 Bends is the steepest section of the trail — 28 switchbacks climbing steeply above the gorge. The guesthouses at Halfway House and Tina's offer spectacular sunset and sunrise views over the gorge. The Tiger Leaping Stone at the bottom of the gorge (accessible via the lower road) marks the spot where, according to legend, a tiger leapt the 25-metre narrows to escape a hunter.
Getting There
From Lijiang: bus to Qiaotou (2 hours, ¥30) where the high trail begins. Return from Walnut Grove to Lijiang by bus (2 hours). Most hikers walk the trail over 2 days, staying overnight at a guesthouse along the route.
Tickets & Entry
Gorge scenic area entry ¥65. Guesthouses ¥40-80 per night.
Practical Tips
The high trail requires reasonable fitness and surefootedness — some sections are exposed and the path is narrow. Trekking poles recommended. A walking stick can be hired at Qiaotou for ¥10. Guesthouses along the route (¥40-80 per night) must be booked in advance in peak season. The trail is best walked east to west (Qiaotou to Walnut Grove) for the best views.
