Kunming
The Spring City — China's most liveable metropolis and gateway to Yunnan's ethnic minority cultures
Overview
Kunming earns its nickname "The Spring City" honestly — sitting at 1,900 metres on the Yunnan Plateau, it enjoys mild temperatures and blue skies year-round, rarely too hot in summer or too cold in winter. As Yunnan's provincial capital and transport hub, most visitors pass through en route to Dali, Lijiang, or Xishuangbanna. But Kunming deserves a day or two in its own right.
The Yunnan Provincial Museum is one of China's finest regional museums, with exceptional collections covering the province's extraordinary ethnic diversity. The Stone Forest (Shilin), a UNESCO World Heritage Site 90 kilometres southeast of the city, is one of China's most dramatic natural formations — thousands of grey limestone spires rising from flat ground, some reaching 30 metres high. The Western Hills above Dianchi Lake offer hiking trails and carved Buddhist cliff temples with panoramic views over the city.
Kunming's food scene reflects Yunnan's diversity. Crossing-the-bridge noodles (过桥米线) — the provincial signature dish, a rich broth poured over rice noodles at the table — originated here. The city's Muslim quarter serves excellent lamb dishes. And the extraordinary variety of wild mushrooms available in Yunnan markets reaches its peak in summer.

Where to Stay
The Guanshang and Green Lake (Cuihu) areas offer the most atmospheric central accommodation — near the old French Quarter, Green Lake Park, and Yunnan University. Budget hostels cluster around the Yunnan University and Cuihu Lake area. International business hotels are concentrated near the railway station and airport road.
Practical Tips
Kunming is primarily a transit city for most Yunnan itineraries. Allow 1–2 days: visit the Yunnan Provincial Museum, eat crossing-the-bridge noodles at a local restaurant (avoid tourist-facing spots on the main shopping streets), and either visit the Stone Forest or the Western Hills depending on your interests. Then continue to Dali or Lijiang.
FAQ
Worth 1–2 days. The Stone Forest alone justifies a night in Kunming, and the food scene is excellent. But it is primarily a gateway city — most of Yunnan's most spectacular destinations require moving on from Kunming.
The defining Yunnan dish. A large bowl of boiling hot broth is brought to the table, into which you add thinly sliced raw ingredients (meat, vegetables, rice noodles) which cook instantly in the broth. The name comes from a legend about a wife carrying noodles across a bridge to her scholar husband — the oil layer on the broth kept it hot.
