Intro

A-Ma Temple (Ma Kok Miu) is Macau's oldest temple, dedicated to the sea goddess A-Ma (Mazu). Built in 1488, it predates the Portuguese arrival in Macau by 65 years. The temple's name — A-Ma Gao (Bay of A-Ma) — is the origin of the name Macau. A complex of prayer halls, pavilions, and rock engravings climbing a hillside at the southern tip of the Macau Peninsula, it remains an active place of worship and one of the most atmospheric heritage sites in Macau.
