About Macau

Macau is the only place in China where gambling is legal, and this single fact has shaped everything about it. The former Portuguese colony (returned to China in 1999, governed as a Special Administrative Region like Hong Kong) generates more gambling revenue than Las Vegas. Its Cotai Strip — built on reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane — is a parade of mega-casinos: the Venetian, Galaxy, Parisian, City of Dreams, each competing in scale and spectacle.

But Macau is far more than its casinos. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves a unique blend of Portuguese colonial and Cantonese Chinese architecture that exists nowhere else in the world. The Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral — a dramatic baroque facade standing alone after the church burned down in 1835 — is one of the most photographed sights in Asia. The Senado Square, paved with the distinctive Portuguese wavy black-and-white stone, is lined with colonial buildings painted in yellows, greens, and pinks. The old Portuguese quarter of Coloane retains a village character that feels completely untouched by the casino economy.

Best time to visit Macau

October to December offers the most pleasant weather — lower humidity and comfortable temperatures. Summer (June–September) brings typhoon risk and high humidity. The Chinese New Year period sees the casinos at their most intensely busy — either exciting or overwhelming depending on your preference.

Getting There

Macau International Airport (MFM) has direct flights to mainland Chinese cities and some Southeast Asian destinations. The Macau-Hong Kong-Zhuhai Bridge (opened 2018, the world's longest sea crossing bridge at 55km) now connects Macau directly to Hong Kong and Zhuhai by bus (about 40 minutes from Hong Kong). Ferry services also run between Macau and Hong Kong (1 hour) and several mainland ports. From Shenzhen, cross-boundary coaches connect via the bridge.

Where to stay

For casino entertainment and spectacle, the Cotai Strip mega-resorts (Venetian, Galaxy, Parisian) offer extraordinary facilities and good value compared to equivalent international properties. For cultural exploration and a more authentic experience, stay in the historic peninsula — small hotels in the Senado Square area put you in the heart of the UNESCO zone.

Local Tips

The casinos operate on a different economy — the base currency is the Macanese Pataca (MOP) but Hong Kong dollars are universally accepted at parity. ATMs dispense both. Casino chips have no value outside the specific casino that issued them.

The UNESCO historic district is best explored on foot — distances between sites are manageable and the neighbourhood character rewards slow wandering. Egg tarts (pastéis de nata) from Lord Stow's Bakery in Coloane are legendary — the original Portuguese egg tart in Macau, worth the journey to the village specifically.
