Intro

The Nanjing City Wall is the longest city wall ever built in human history. Constructed by the Hongwu Emperor between 1366 and 1393, the original circuit stretched 35.27 kilometres and enclosed an area of 43 square kilometres — the largest enclosed city in the world at that time. Unlike many Chinese city walls that were demolished in the 20th century, much of Nanjing's wall survives, including the extraordinary Zhonghua Gate (Zhonghua Men) — the most complex fortress gate in China.
