Intro

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum on Purple Mountain is the tomb of Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China. Built between 1926 and 1929, the grand complex ascends from the entrance gate through a sequence of terraces and ceremonial spaces to the blue-tiled tomb hall at the summit — reached via 392 marble steps. The mausoleum is a masterpiece of Republican-era architecture blending Chinese traditional elements with Western influences.

Local Tips

The 392 steps are a significant climb at altitude — allow 30 minutes for the ascent. The view from the top over the forested Purple Mountain is worth the effort. Combine with Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and the Nanjing Museum nearby.
