Highlights — Why we like Su Causeway & West Lake Promenade

Intro

The Su Causeway (Su Di) is a 2.8-kilometre causeway across the western part of West Lake, built by the Song Dynasty governor and poet Su Dongpo (Su Shi) in the 11th century using dredged lake silt. Tree-lined and punctuated by six arched bridges, it is considered the most beautiful of the lake's walking paths. In spring, the causeway is lined with blooming peach and willow trees; in winter it is atmospheric and quiet.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May) for peach blossoms and willows. Early morning any time of year.

Getting There

Accessible from multiple points around West Lake's western shore. Bicycle hire available.

Local Tips

Walk north to south in the morning for the best light. The Su Causeway connects to the Broken Bridge at the northeast end — combining both into a circular walk is the classic West Lake route.
