Jiefangbei — Liberation Monument — stands at the geographic and commercial heart of Chongqing's Yuzhong peninsula. The monument itself is modest, but the surrounding district is one of China's most vibrant urban environments: pedestrianised shopping streets, restaurants on every floor of every building, and at night, a blaze of neon that reflects off the surrounding hillsides. The best time to visit is after dark, walking the elevated walkways between buildings and watching the city light up across the river valleys below.
