Tianmen Mountain & Glass Skywalk
Tianmen Mountain — Heaven's Gate arch, glass walkways, and the world's longest cable car
Intro
Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate Mountain) rises dramatically 1,519 metres above Zhangjiajie city. It is famous for its natural arch — Tianmen Cave — a 131-metre high opening in the cliff face that locals call the Gate of Heaven. Access is via the world's longest passenger cable car (7.5 kilometres, 30 minutes) from the city centre, which rises through extraordinary karst scenery. At the summit, glass-bottomed walkways cling to the cliff faces, and 999 steps lead down through the forest to Tianmen Cave.
Best Time to Visit
Clear days for best visibility. October-November for autumn colour. Avoid Chinese national holidays.
Highlights
- Tianmen Cave viewed from the cable car below is the most dramatic single image. The glass skywalk sections on the cliff face offer stomach-dropping views straight down. The 999 Heaven's Gate Steps descend through dense forest to the cave entrance — best descended rather than climbed.
Getting There
The cable car base station is in central Zhangjiajie city. Buses and taxis available. The cable car is separate from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and requires a separate ticket.
Tickets & Entry
¥258 including cable car. Glass walkway included. No additional charges at summit.
Practical Tips
Allow a full day — the cable car, summit walks, glass walkways, and 999 steps together take 5-6 hours. The cable car can have long queues — book in advance online if possible. Cloud and mist are common and can close the glass walkways — check conditions before visiting.
