Intro

Sichuan Opera face-changing (bianlian) is one of the most visually stunning performance traditions in China. Performers change elaborately painted masks in a fraction of a second — seemingly by magic — revealing a succession of different coloured faces. The technique is a closely guarded secret passed within opera troupes for generations. The broader Sichuan Opera performance also includes fire-breathing, acrobatics, shadow puppetry, and comedic interludes. Most visitor-friendly performances run 90 minutes and are staged at dedicated venues in central Chengdu.
